Letter to all of Dr. Deva Ghosh’s friends, colleagues and students

It is with great sadness that my sister Sheila Ghosh and I, inform you that our father Dr. Deva Prasad Ghosh died unexpectedly last Friday Dec 6, 2019 at 9:11am local time in Bryan, Texas. He had only just returned to the US on Nov 17th. He spent the last 15+ years of his life working in Malaysia for Petronas and then UTP.

He will be greatly missed by his wife Deloris, his daughters and stepdaughters, and granddaughter Diana. He was a loving husband and (step-)father, and cared deeply for his family.

Education was of utmost importance to him- his father sent him to university, he paid for his younger siblings, my education at Georgetown and Sheila’s at the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford.

He was very proud of setting up CSI – the Center of Excellence in Subsurface Seismic Imaging and Hydrocarbon Prediction- at UTP and loved teaching at UTP.
Being a professor was his true calling. He worked very hard for UTP and his students- staying beyond office hours and working on weekends over these past few months and was heartbroken to have to leave.

We have been blessed with many wonderful messages of condolence from the UTP and geophysics community, from people from all over the world. He was so proud of knowing all of you, and would show pictures from universities around the world that he visited.

Dr Deva was not done living- he had no intention of retiring any time soon and was actively working on future projects.

The geophysics community, under the leadership of Sandeep Kumar at Petronas and Gerard Wieggerink at EAGE, have been kind enough to rally the community to arrange a memorial for him, in January 2020.

As his colleagues and students at UTP, CSI, and PETRONAS meant so much to him, we will arrange for livestream services so that his friends and colleagues around the world may join us.

We cherish our memories with him and we will pay tribute to him during a memorial service. Please join us by following this blog.

Sincerely,
Nancy and Sheila Ghosh
Dr Deva Ghosh’s daughters.
